Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund surrendered a comfortable lead to end up splitting the points with Sat. Pauli in a 3-3 stalemate at the Millerntor Stadion on Saturday as debutant centre-back Filippo Mane was shown a red card.

Goals from Serhou Guirassy, Waldemar Anton and Julian Brandt were cancelled out by strikes from Andreas Hountondji, Danel Sinani and Eric Smith as Dortmund ended the game with 10 men following Mane’s sending off.

Guirassy opened the scoring before Hountondji put the hosts back on level terms. Anton and Brandt helped Dortmund establish a two-goal lead before Mane was given the marching orders with five minutes left in regulation time. All hell broke loose as Sinani converted from the spot before Smith netted the leveller in the 89th minute with a driven long range effort.

“Last year we dropped a lot of points at the end due to red cards. It seems we’ve carried that into the new season,” Brandt said.

“It hurts. At some point, you have to stop explaining it to people afterwards and learn how to play with a man down in the important moments,” he said following the disappoiting draw.

With 10 minutes of stoppage time awarded, the hosts appeared most likely to score, but Dortmund just held on for a point.

A costly first-half penalty miss from Guirassy, with Dortmund a goal up, contributed to Dortmund dropping points in a season opener for the first time in a decade.

Mane will miss Dortmund’s next match, and his absence is likely to hurt a side that has only one fit centre-back remaining in their squad.

Frankfurt Beat Werder Bremen

Eintracht Frankfurt demonstrated they can still find the back of the net without their former striker Hugo Ekitike by thrashing Werder Bremen 4-1 at home. Jean-Matteo Bahoya netted twice, once in each half.

Hugo Ekitike, now with Liverpool, scored 15 goals and provided eight assists in the league last season. However, young talents Bahoya, Can Uzun, and Ansgar Knauff all scored for Frankfurt in this dominant win.

Bremen managed to pull one back through Justin Njinmah in the second half but rarely posed a threat to the hosts.

German Cup holders Stuttgart were defeated by Union Berlin, who emerged victorious with a 2-1 win courtesy of a first-half double from debutant Ilyas Ansah.

Returning to Berlin for the first time since winning the cup final in May, Stuttgart hit the woodwork twice and had a stoppage-time equaliser from Nick Woltemade disallowed for offside.

Elsewhere, Augsburg triumphed 3-1 at Freiburg, and Wolfsburg secured a 3-1 victory at Heidenheim.

On Friday, defending champions Bayern Munich started their season with a bang, defeating RB Leipzig 6-0 at home, with Harry Kane scoring a second-half hat-trick.
