The more affordable version of the Toyota Fortuner is expected to be underpinned by the IMV 0 platform previewed at the Japan Mobility Show

Toyota presented a collection of futuristic concepts at the Japan Mobility Show 2023, garnering significant attention. Among these, the IMV 0 concept has sparked numerous discussions. The IMV (Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle) architecture has been the foundation for several well-known Toyota utility vehicles, including Hilux and Fortuner.

Although both models still utilize the IMV, the Innova has transitioned to the more contemporary TNGA-C, allowing for a conventional front-wheel-drive layout in its Hycross guise. The IMV 0 pickup concept, showcased in Tokyo, is built on the principle that affordability and providing enhanced utility-based customization options are paramount.

As promised, it has spawned the Hilux Champ in Thailand for an affordable price tag of USD 13,000 (Rs. 10.81 lakh approximately). Is the Fortuner next in line? No official confirmation has been made yet but we do think it is the case considering its popularity as a full-size SUV with good off-road capabilities mainly in the Asian markets.

Moreover, the Fortuner’s pricing has skyrocketed in recent years making it nearly inaccessible for many buyers despite the nameplate continuing to enjoy good volume sales. The chassis’s modular design empowers Toyota to explore various body styles and the Japanese auto major has acknowledged that it is actively exploring new avenues and seeking opportunities across various price brackets with the IMV 0.

In contrast to the current Fortuner, models based on the IMV 0 platform may not feature some premium amenities. However, the emphasis on practicality and spaciousness is expected to be a significant selling point. Toyota is presently in the process of developing an SUV project rooted in the IMV 0 according to multiple reports.

It has the potential to give rise to a more budget-friendly iteration of the Fortuner while using the existing GD series diesel engine. While the exact launch timeline is not divulged, considering how quickly the Hilux Champ made its way to the Thai market after the debut of the IMV 0 pickup concept, the more affordable Fortuner won’t be too far away.

In 2024, Toyota is expected to introduce the 48V mild hybrid diesel tech to the Fortuner lineup in India to ensure improved performance and acceleration along with better mileage and lowered emissions. The Hilux has already received this system in Europe and other markets.
