Maruti Suzuki Brezza CBG will make its world premiere at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024 in New Delhi

Maruti Suzuki recently reintroduced the mild hybrid technology in Brezza ZXi and ZXi+ manual variants in India. The largest carmaker in the country has the widest portfolio of CNG cars and is banking big on the transition towards electrification as well. The first all-electric car from Maruti Suzuki is expected to debut later this year dubbed the eVX.

It will be followed by an electric hatchback in the future. However, the Indo-Japanese manufacturer is actively exploring alternative fuel technologies and in recent times, the availability of the S-CNG range has widened as even the current flagship SUV, the Grand Vitata, boasts CNG variants. Its smaller sibling, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, is also sold with CNG trims.

The compact SUV is retailed in LXi, VXi and ZXi CNG trims. Maruti Suzuki will host the world premiere of the Compressed Biomethane Gas version of the Brezza at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024 scheduled between February 1 and 3. Following its debut, the company is expected to launch its first-ever CBG in the domestic market shortly.

The Bio-CNG, short for Compressed Biomethane Gas, stands as a renewable and eco-friendly fuel sourced from the anaerobic digestion or upgrading of biogas derived from organic materials. The generation of biogas commonly involves the decomposition of organic matter, including agricultural waste, food waste, sewage, and other organic feedstocks.

Through this process, compressed biomethane gas, or bio-CNG, emerges as a sustainable alternative fuel with positive environmental implications. The utilisation of compressed biomethane in vehicles offers a significant advantage in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. When derived from organic waste, biomethane is deemed a carbon-neutral fuel.

This is because the carbon released during combustion is part of the natural carbon cycle; it originates from organic sources and does not contribute to a net increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide. Compressed biomethane serves as a viable fuel for vehicles specifically designed to operate on compressed natural gas (CNG). Typically, these vehicles undergo modifications or are purpose-built to incorporate CNG storage tanks and are equipped with engines optimized for the combustion of natural gas.

This adaptation allows for the efficient and eco-friendly use of compressed biomethane as an alternative fuel in transportation. It will be interesting to see the steps taken by Maruti Suzuki to implement this fuel as an alternative to gasoline and appeal to customers.
